Let the speculation begin

News of Vice President Kamala Harris likely becoming the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee has dominated the U.S. news cycle since Sunday. That likelihood is already facing allegations of “a coup” from the right, but it’s hard to overlook the fact that Democrats are excited about the Harris campaign. According to reports, the campaign said it has raised more than $100 million since Sunday, with more than 28,000 volunteers signing up.

So how does the Vice President stack up with Latino voters?

In 2019, when Harris was running for President, polls had her in the single digits with Latino voters before she suspended her campaign.

Now in 2024, that story is very different. Here is what we can share so far, knowing more polls will keep coming in, and this is only the beginning of what will be a very contentious and close election.

From “Internal polling shows Harris ahead of Biden in net favorability” by Rafael Bernal of The Hill: Vice President Harris led President Biden in favorability among key demographics, according to an internal poll run by the Biden-Harris campaign earlier this month.”

Later in the piece, Bernal writes, “Among Latinos ages 18 to 24, Harris led Biden by 22 points, and she led by 20 points among Latino Republicans. Specifically among Latinas in that age group, Harris’s advantage grew to 24 points.”

Bernal was writing about the internal memo later shared on Twitter by pollster Matt A. Barreto:

From Florida International University’s “Hispanic Voices: A Comprehensive Annual U.S. Survey”: This presentation and webinar about Latino voters was made public in July before President Biden decided not to seek a second term.

According to the survey of 1,032 Latino respondents, Harris was seen as the best choice to replace Biden.

Her favorability ratings were at 52.5% in this poll.

According to a July 11 Axios Latino story, a March 2024 Noticias Telemundo/Ipsos poll of Latino respondents reported a 39% favorable opinion about Harris, a nine-point drop from 2021.

From Political Polls on Twitter:

That tweet is linked to the new CNN poll released Wednesday after the Sunday Biden news.

From NBC News, July 7-9: This poll showed some demographic breakdowns. According to that poll, Harris has a 55%-39% advantage over Trump with Latinos.
