Latino Impact Unseen
Episode 13 with Ana Valdez, President and CEO of the Latino Donor Collaborative
Via Canva
Happy Friday to our 795 email subscribers and our social audience of close to 7,000 followers across all our platforms. We are on a 20-week streak of posting daily, and the pitches keep coming in, so much so that I am considering offering a weekend post.
Before we decide, I just wanted to ask you all to let me know if this is a good idea or not?
The following is a poll we created to answer this question.
Would you like a weekend post from The Latino Newsletter? This would feature some opinion pieces we can't publish during the week because our space is limited. |
Meanwhile, next week is going to be really busy for us. We will begin to share our Latino Election Project stories that we produced for New England Public Media and also publish the next set of stories for “La Voz de Mi Gente 2024.”
Ok, on to Episode 13.
Episode 13: Latino Impact Unseen
I have been following the work of the Latino Donor Collaborative for years, ever since the early days of Latino Rebels. This week, I invited Ana Valdez to discuss the significant economic impact of the U.S. Latino community, the challenges of media representation, and why Latinos still lack political power.
Ana was a fabulous guest, dropping a lot of knowledge with charm, wit and joy. We even found a way to talk Modelo beer commercials.
And then at one point, Ana said this, “Media is the most important feedback that any person in this country gets, right? We, as you perfectly know, receive hundreds of thousands of images every day. This industry is actually, first of all, making us invisible, but when we are not invisible, most of the time we're negative. So one of the most important consequences of this invisibility and then the few times that we’re portrayed, this negative portrayal is that people that have not met a Latino or that have no contact with a Latino believe those things.”
There you go. Enjoy the show.

What We’re Reading
Trump and Latino Men: From NBC News, “While Vice President Kamala Harris led Trump among Hispanic voters overall, 54% to 40%, each candidate got 47% support among Latino men, a marked difference from the 26-point lead Harris had among Latinas.”
Pew on Immigrants, Harris, and Trump: We missed this October 21 post from Pew, which notes that, “Majorities of U.S. registered voters say immigrants – both undocumented and legal – mostly fill jobs American citizens don’t want, as opposed to jobs citizens would like to have.”
Meanwhile in Puerto Rico: Is the race getting tight? Based on this data, the answer is yes.
Dalmau and JGO in a virtual polling tie for governor of #PuertoRico, with 1.5 weeks left until Election Day.
