Celebrating the 1st Year of The Latino Newsletter

Announcing a new fundraising campaign to note a momentous occasion

June is a birthday month for The Latino Newsletter. This was the month last year when I began the startup process that led to this outlet being registered as a Massachusetts nonprofit and eventually officially recognized by the IRS.

So yes, The Latino Newsletter turns 1 at the end of this month. I never thought we would reach this milestone, but thanks to the generous support from the Latino Media Consortium, The Boston Foundation, CALÓ News, and our individual supporters, we can say that yes, we've made it a full year.

We are taking a moment. This is a big win.

Throughout this month, I plan to share more of the startup journey and reflect on the last year. When Latino Rebels was in its first year 14 years ago, the startup journey was a joyful one. That is how I feel about The Latino Newsletter, one year later, so expect a little more of my words throughout the month. As with any nonprofit organization startup, we have to constantly fundraise.

I continue to keep going because we are at the cusp.

The foundational steps for The Latino Newsletter have begun to take shape, and we are 100% confident that we will meet a significant goal by the end of August, which will lead to the start of a new production and leadership team. In the meantime, we continue to seek new grant opportunities and rely on individual donations.

For the next two months, we estimate our core operational costs to be around $5,000 every 30 days. This consists of standard expenses to keep the company running. It also includes a minimal budget for staff and contractors. We are currently at 77% of our year-end goal of $20,000. We would love your help to make our goal six months before year-end. That would be a nice way to celebrate one full year.

We remain committed to our mission and invite you to join us on this journey.

And now a word from our sponsor.

What We’re Reading

Mexico’s Judicial Election: From The Mexico Political Economist about Mexico’s judicial election, “[It] failed to get people to the polls. Only 12% of Mexicans voted—the lowest number since Mexico became a full democracy in 2000. Many did so to spoil their ballots in protest (around 10%), with another 10% leaving their ballot blank. All of this could well put the effective vote below single digits.”

San Diego ICE Raid: From NPR, “A chaotic scene from a federal immigration raid on a popular San Diego restaurant is drawing new attention to government tactics in the push to fulfill President Trump's promise to deport millions in a historic crackdown.”

Milford Student Detained: From The Boston Globe, “A chaotic scene from a federal immigration raid on a popular San Diego restaurant is drawing new attention to government tactics in the push to fulfill President Trump's promise to deport millions in a historic crackdown.”
