Hey, all.

The Latino Newsletter is kicking off week 35, and we’re working to return to our regular cadence of daily news stories and commentary pieces. This week, we’re also updating our pitch guidelines, so expect those to be published soon.

As part of our commitment to transparency, we’re sharing our top-line, unaudited financials for the 2024 fiscal year. Like many early-stage nonprofit organizations, we’re balancing growth with financial sustainability. Here’s where we landed:

📊 2024 Financial Overview

💰 Total Revenue: $86,402.04

  • Grants: $83,600.00

  • Donations: $2,763.44

  • Newsletter Advertising: $38.60

📉 Total Expenses: $88,447.95

  • Staff & Payroll: $55,221.66

  • Contractors: $18,550.00

  • Operational Costs: $14,676.29, which includes:

    • Software & Office Supplies: $1,238.79

    • Insurance: $1,149.83

    • Legal & Professional Services: $1,428.33

    • Marketing & Advertising: $63.00

    • Travel & Meals for Reporting: $2,628.95

    • Reimbursable Startup Expenses: $5,593.12

    • Bank Fees, Taxes & Miscellaneous: $2,574.27

📊 Net Revenue: -$2,045.91

We closed 2024 with a small deficit, which is expected in the early stages of a nonprofit newsroom. But we knew this gap was possible, and since then, we got close to our 2024 donation goals and built momentum for 2025. That’s why The Latino Newsletter is focused on raising at least $4,000 in the next three weeks to close the gap and continue growing. This amount would complete all our contractor commitments and give us a runway to the end of April. If we get more, we get more runway. In the meantime, we have been encouraged by new funder interest and are working hard to secure other revenue streams.

These are some of the 2025 goals we have identified:

  • Ensure The Latino Newsletter is a platform where high-quality reporting, thought-provoking commentary, and voices thrive, reflecting the rich complexity of Latino experiences.

  • Produce a second season of our podcast.

  • Launch a local San Juan bureau with one editor and one correspondent to cover the island’s local news and cultural landscape.

  • Continue empowering young journalists in Massachusetts through hands-on training, internships, and opportunities to publish impactful stories.

  • Partner with local news outlets to establish a new immigration beat for the Greater Boston area.

Consider this our pledge portion of our work.

When I launched The Latino Newsletter, I gave myself a year to get this outlet foundational funding.

We stay hopeful and are still in the race.

At 56% of Our 2025 Goal

Thanks to our 126th supporter, our donations are now at $11,221, 56% of our 2025 fundraising goal. If we reach $20,000, The Latino Newsletter can continue for the rest of 2025.

We want to keep The Latino Newsletter accessible without paywalls. To help, you can donate here. Any amount (one-time or monthly) will keep us going.
