NAHJ Highlights Guidance on Covering Immigration Raids

As immigration enforcement makes headlines, journalists are being reminded (again) of best (and ethical) practices

This week has been a strange one for me. Beyond a news cycle that keeps accelerating through the Trumpification of mass media (blaming DEI for Wednesday night's tragic accident at DCA?), it has been tough to find the energy to publish a daily post for The Latino Newsletter in a way that adds a unique angle to decipher what this all means.

But I promised that as this site's publisher, we would produce one post per day. Even if that post isn’t original reporting, commentary, a podcast, or the latest in our nonprofit startup journey, we will still publish it.

For today’s post, I want to applaud the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) for sharing an Instagram carousel on Wednesday that resurfaces important guidelines on how American media should cover immigration raids.

“Members of NAHJ, particularly those at Spanish-language outlets, have been covering immigration for years. Now that immigration raids are making national news, we’re sharing guidelines for all journalists to cover these events accurately, sensitively, and ethically,” the post said.

One of the guidelines from NAHJ

It then shared a series of images outlining key guidelines, which are also expanded upon at this link: NAHJ Immigration Guidelines.

As a lifetime NAHJ member, it is an important reminder of how to cover these stories and avoid falling into the trap of just parroting government talking points as what can only be described as propaganda.

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s story, which will be an original report about immigration enforcement in Puerto Rico over the past two weeks.
