Colorado Play Salon to Premiere Hybrid Readings of New Works
It is important that we tell stories which show the complex humanity of our people

Editor’s Note: Occasionally, The Latino Newsletter will publish media releases about topics we find interesting and newsworthy. For today’s post, two contributors who have written for us in the past are part of a new hybrid arts event in Colorado. Here is what Jon wrote to us.
LAKEWOOD, Colorado — Flamboyán Theatre presents a showcase of new plays by Latiné authors. Show your support for BIPOC artists and theatre makers on March 3 and 5 by attending The New Latiné Play Salon at our home at The Three Leaches Theater.
The plays will include commentary from the authors as well as a chance for the audience to offer feedback to the actors and directors, which is vital to developing these works.
This hybrid event will also be live-streamed for greater accessibility.
During this time when Latiné and queer communities are under attack on a national level, we must tell stories that show the complex humanity of our people. These works cover multiple genres and go beyond the narrow immigrant narrative that is often imposed upon us. To be of Latin American descent is to exist outside of boxes and to have an expansive life experience, and these plays are a demonstration of the diverse voices that make up our community.
The Salon is broken up into two nights. On March 3, we will be highlighting the work of Mexican-American playwright Bella O'Brien's paranoid thriller water from the river is also in the sea, which will be the opening play of our 2026 season. This will be followed by Puerto Rican playwright Baylee Shlichtman's horror comedy You Will Be Made of Ashes Too, which will have a full production September 17-27.
Ticket information (both live and virtual) for the March 3 event is here.
On March 5, we will showcase the comedic works of two Puerto Rican writers, Jon Marcantoni and Alberto Medina (President of Boricuas Unidos en la Diáspora), as well as a bilingual jukebox musical about the life of La Lupe by Mexican-Puerto Rican author Alejandro Valtierra. Puro Estilo will receive a full production June 11-21, and Playa and Right of Admission will have a one-night performance on June 8 at Festival Flamboyán, our Puerto Rican arts and culture festival, which will be a joint collaboration with Raíces Brewing Company.
Ticket information (both live and virtual) for the March 5 event is here.
Jon Marcantoni is a campaign organizer for The Redress Movement and founder of Flamboyán Theatre.
Now at 66% of Our 2025 Goal
Thanks to our 152nd supporter, we are now at $13,179 in donations, 66% of our 2025 fundraising goal. If we receive another $1,500 by the end of this week, The Latino Newsletter can continue until the end of March. If we hit our $20,000 goal, we have a runway for all of 2025.
We want to keep The Latino Newsletter accessible without paywalls. To help, you can donate here. Any amount (one-time or monthly) will keep us going.
