This week, we put out a call for pitches, and I wanted to take a moment to share answers to any questions. Here goes:

Who should I pitch to?

You can email me [email protected]. I read every pitch that I get.

What should the pitch entail?

I don’t like to tell someone how to send a pitch, but given our limited bandwidth (I am The Latino Newsletter’s only editor right now), take the time to ask yourself why the pitch is so important and why you are the right person for it. Don’t spend more than 1-2 paragraphs explaining the pitch. Be brief and concise.

What are you looking for?

I am primarily interested in political or election cycle story pitches about the U.S. Latino community right now, although that shouldn’t stop you from pitching The Latino Newsletter if you have a different topic or angle. As long as it is relevant to our community, I will take the time to consider it.

As an editor, I gravitate to pitches that are unique and seem fresh. They can be local, regional or national. To learn more about what I like to write or talk about, my Muck Rack profile stays updated.

I love local stories that have universal appeal. I am also particularly interested in stories out of Puerto Rico, culture takes and topics that reflect the complexities of the U.S. Latino community.

Who can pitch The Latino Newsletter?

We will consider pitches from freelance journalists, reporters, opinion writers and audio producers. If you are an organization or firm trying to place an opinion piece, we would be interested as well, but those types of opinion pieces would not be compensated.

How much can I get paid for my work?

I will be honest with this one: our budget is extremely limited right now as we start up, but I feel strongly that contributors should get paid for their work. As a writer myself, I understand. Your words and work are not free. The Latino Newsletter does not have a rate card just yet, so this is what we plan to do when considering a pitch:

• When I reply to accept a pitch, I will include a fee in the response.

• If we do reach an agreement, we will create a standard contract that will respect your rights as a freelance contributor.

• We will pay via BILL and can pay online.

An Update From Rep. Raúl Grijalva and His Cancer Diagnosis: On Wednesday, Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ) posted an update about his cancer diagnosis and a photo of him.

Trump’s Disapproval With Black and Latino Voters: The Associated Press published a poll analysis about Donald Trump, noting “that about 7 in 10 Black Americans have a somewhat or very unfavorable view of Trump, as do about half of Hispanic Americans. While both groups do see Trump a little more favorably than when he left office in 2021, their opinion of him is still more negative than positive.” (Story here)
