LOS ANGELES — It is Wednesday morning here on the West Coast, where I am helping my Free Press colleagues produce Wednesday’s livestream conversation with FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez.
Meanwhile, we have hit another historic milestone in the startup journey at The Latino Newsletter. With the news of our IRS nonprofit status being finalized this past April, we will be operating independently, starting on June 1, with no fiscal sponsor. That means that any donations we receive from that day on will go directly to us. It’s exciting.
Which is why I would like to thank the entire team at the Tiny News Collective for being such an excellent fiscal sponsor while we waited for our nonprofit status to become official. Since last August, TNC has been there for us, and without their fiscal sponsorship support, we would not be here today. Full stop.
So thank you, TNC, for your encouragement and support. To all the days when I worked diligently to ensure The Latino Newsletter was operating, I will never forget you all. And it is not goodbye. We still plan to be part of the TNC membership cohort, which comprises some of the sharpest and smartest founders in our journalism space. Starting a new nonprofit venture from scratch can be lonely at times, and having access to other founders who also share that feeling has made it all less lonely.
Which is why the next few weeks at The Latino Newsletter will be transformational. I honestly didn’t think I would be saying that, but now I am, and Tiny News Collective will always be part of this startup’s origin story.
In June, we will be announcing a new campaign to celebrate The Latino Newsletter’s one-year anniversary. Stay tuned for more information on that and how you can join us in celebrating together. We have created a new lane for our community, and we are on the right path.
