Where Will We Go Next This Election Season?
I honestly don't know, but that won't stop The Latino Newsletter from trying
As The Latino Newsletter officially starts its election coverage plan this week (thanks to the support of the Latino Community Foundation), I am watching Monday’s live gavel-to-gavel coverage of the Republican National Convention and wondering exactly what our coverage plan will entail.
It is an editor’s biggest fear.
I have spent the last few weeks planning for a July 15 launch that would focus on the election through a clear Latino lens. Then, Saturday’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump happened, and I had to scrap the initial plans.
Suddenly, there are calls to dial back the political rhetoric, as if years of dialing it up did not create the environment we are living in now as Americans. Our memory is short and lacks historical context, but this is where we are.
Still, I am convinced that no matter how “civil” this election will now become (and Trump is showing no signs of dialing back on anything), we will still witness the following:
Yet why do I still think that toning down the rhetoric won't include immigrants?

And, of course, we will still be witnessing the reality: Latinos will play a key role in this election even though they are yet to be national political powerhouses and difference-makers. JD Vance over Marco Rubio? That might turn out to be the only “win” Democrats might get this week.
Another presidential election cycle where there will not be a Latino or Latina VP nominee. I am starting to think that this might be the last cycle it happens.

This is why a new outlet like The Latino Newsletter is necessary. During these historic times, the fear that Latinos will be ignored and lost is real. We must continue to stay the course and prioritize our community. Our voices need to be active ones.
This week, we will start the work and do our best. I don’t know where this will go, but I do know that The Latino Newsletter will be part of the dialogue. If you have any ideas or suggestions as to what we should cover (both in print and audio formats), just let me know (email).
