Ok, on to today’s podcast episode.
Episode 16: The Untold Latino Vote
I have been following the work of Geraldo Cadava for years. The first time I discovered Geraldo’s work was in 2020 when Latino USA featured him in a fantastic audio story from producer Alissa Escarce about Latinos and that election cycle.
Since then, I have engaged with Geraldo online about all things Latino politics. This cycle, he did a fantastic job filing for The New Yorker, and I wanted to bring him on the show to discuss the post-election vibe with Latinos. This was the first time we have talked with each other outside of social media replies. The conversation felt like two friends catching up about 2024.
When we were chatting about Trump’s Latino support, Geraldo said this: “Trump's greatest gains have actually been among recently naturalized first- and second-generation Latinos who immigrated from Latin America, or their parents immigrated from Latin America. They left a bad situation there, and they want stability and security here in the United States. They don't necessarily want to be lumped together as part of an American minority group called Latinos. They're kind of out doing their own thing, trying to make things better for themselves and their family.”
That’s just one of the many takes from this episode. Enjoy.

The Latino Vote in CJR: I filed my first byline for Columbia Journalism Review on Friday. It is about how most American political media missed the 2024 Latino voter takeaways, even when so many Latino journalists were leaving clues and signs in their reporting.
The good folks at 1A brought me back for another appearance this week.
Have a great weekend! On a personal note, I will be watching my son and his Suffolk Men’s soccer teammates playing in the 1st Round of the Division 3 NCAA Soccer Tournament.
