Venezuela, One Month Later
Episode 5 of The Latino Newsletter is out
It is the Friday before a three-day weekend (yay!) and a big thank you to all 670 of you who subscribe to The Latino Newsletter. Also, we are hiring in Western Massachusetts for a new project about Latinos and local election issues.
Okay, on to Episode 5 of The Latino Newsletter podcast.
If you have followed my work over the years, I never shied away from featuring stories about Venezuela. I have written several opinion pieces on the topic as well. With this week marking one month since the country’s presidential elections (see Lucía’s July dispatch from Caracas), I thought it was time to check in on what is transpiring now.
It has been one month since the country of Venezuela descended into crisis with a contentious presidential election. The incumbent president, Nicolás Maduro, declared himself the winner, but his opposition points to their meticulous work counting votes and receipts from thousands of voting machines that they say prove otherwise. Maduro has been steadfast in his refusal to acknowledge this evidence, despite pressure and skepticism from other governments around the world.
I know, I know. Venezuela is a very emotional and controversial topic, a “third rail” issue. That shouldn’t stop us, though, from talking about it, and I was happy to welcome Liz Rebecca Alarcón of Pulso to the show. Liz Rebecca (yes, there is a joke in a show about using BOTH your given names) is of Venezuelan-American descent. She is a friend and also a former client of mine. She is also someone who is creating new media lanes for our community.
We talked about the situation moving forward, how it impacts Venezuelan communities in the U.S. and what a progressive stance on the country means in 2024. Liz was a fabulous guest.
Here is the show.

What We’re Watching
Brandon Loran Maxwell of The Daily Chela had me on his show Thursday night, and even though it was late for me with East Coast time, we spent close to 90 minutes chatting. The show starts at 8:58.
Also, I was on the BBC on Thursday as a guest of The Context. The end of each show ends on a lighter note, and the Thursday show was no different.
"Justine, don't get me in trouble with my mom."
This is how @CFraserBBC, @JustineGreening and me ended the last hour of THE CONTEXT yesterday on @BBCNews.
Wait for it. 😅
